Hot tea can be idea for cold days. When served cold, it is a favorite refreshment at meals or to cool you under the summer sun. Rumor has it that drinking tea can have disease fighting agents in it. But in parts of the world, tea is more than a drink. Mealtimes are replaced with tea.
Historical Content Involving Tea
Serving as a traditional aspect, drinking tea was a British and Victorian culture dating back to the 1600's. Once the children were put to rest, upper class parents would enjoy a cup of tea. The Bedford Duchess, Anna Marie Russell, did not like waiting long times between meals. When it was too early for dinner, midday snacks kept her preoccupied.
Small cakes, or bread items went well with afternoon tea. It became popular among others after she began taking part in afternoon tea. In a short amount of time, other citizens of the United Kingdom drank afternoon tea. Cucumber and ham and cheese based foods were popular a way to satisfy hunger with tea. Scones and sweet cakes compliment tea.
The Distinction between Afternoon Tea and High Tea
The practice of having a light meal of tea and sandwiches was not practical for the working class of England. If working the farm or engaged in late evening jobs, the working class lacked much time for a break. Given the conditions, tea time was still a regular activity. They just moved the meal a little later in the evening and called it high tea.
High Tea in this case means main. At sunset, high tea is served as a large meal. A variety of foods including sandwiches, fish, eggs and other meats are served during high tea. High is another word for principal in the working class homes. High tea was simply the largest meal that took place at the end of the day.
The Custom Today
Hotels and restaurants take part in afternoon tea. The custom has been maintained by the tourism industry in the United Kingdom to appeal to travelers. Most people today when they take an afternoon tea will pair it with biscuits, a light cookie. Americans generally take coffee breaks instead of tea breaks.
United States has some hotels that participate in high tea. Afternoon tea and high tea are often practiced by tourists or those of a higher social class.
